Inequality in International Immigration
It just dawned on me that there is a practice in international immigration that no one has ever commented on, and that is inequality of treatment accorded to citizens as opposed to non-citizens at points of entry or departure from certain countries. Canada treats all entrants and exitrants to its borders equally, ie there are no separate lines for "Canadian Residents" and "Non-Canadian residents" of foreigners. I am aware of the legitimate purpose and longstanding rationale that foreigners have no legal right to enter and remain in a country of which they are not citizens. But this is different from the practice of outright discrimination and unequal treatment for no reason at all other than that someone is a foreigner.

THE POLITICS OF IMMIGRATION
THE recent changes to the Immigration policy announced by the Minister of citizenship and Immigration, Joe Volpe liberalizing the time frames and numbers of sponsored parents and grandparents to come to Canada has elicited negative political commentaries from the Conservative Party and various media outlets like the National Post and the Sun family newspapers.

TREATMENT OF PROFESSIONAL IMMIGRANTS A DISGRACE THE treatment of most recently arrived professional immigrants can only be mildy described as professionally disgraceful to them. Most of us have heard or read about professional immigrants like engineers, doctors, lawyers, nurses and others who end up as taxi drivers, security guards, interpreters, unemployed, under-employed and so on because the responsible professional bodies, government regulatory agencies or other obstacles have prevented these individuals from joining in their professional designations. These are individuals who applied and qualified to come to Canada on the basis of their professional qualifications and ability to find jobs in their fields in Canada. Most if not all of them were never told that there will be professional obstacles in getting jobs in their fields.

IMMIGRATION MATTERS Pardon And Immigration It has been stated that "cross-examination is the greatest engine ever invented for the establishment of the truth". That is in reference to the criminal process. I believe however, that in the immigration context, the greatest engine ever invented for showing leniency to criminal convicts who are applying for immigration status is the pardon. Sadly, the criminal pardon is the least used or known by criminal immigrants.

These developments point out the obvious: the need to continue to encourage the power brokers to consider appointing members of diverse communities to positions of power and influence in Canada.
